Mark Stokes - Advancing Digital Forensics in the Metropolitan Police
Mark Stokes is a digital forensic expert witness with more than 38 years of experience leading major forensic units across the Metropolitan Police. His expertise spans cell site analysis, telecommunications evidence, digital device examination, and operational leadership in complex, high-profile cases. Mark Stokes' leadership within the Metropolitan Police influenced not only frontline operational practices but also national policy and academic collaboration.
In 2008, Mark Stokes became head of digital, cybercrime, communications, and forensics units at the Metropolitan Police. He inherited a significant budget overspend in the forensic service provider contract and reversed it to a 10 percent underspend within eighteen months, demonstrating strong strategic and financial management. He also led the drafting and publication of digital forensic codes of practice.
He works as a CTO and director of engineering and forensic services and consults with universities on course development, laboratory design, process standards, and digital strategies. He has also designed and delivered specialized digital forensics training internationally and established a chip-level reverse engineering laboratory in collaboration with the University of East London.
